WAYWARD CODE OF CONDUCT

Wayward is committed to providing a welcoming environment for our participants, regardless of gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, mental illness, physical appearance, body, age, race, ethnicity, nationality, language, or religion. We’ve written this code of conduct not because we expect bad behavior from our community—which, in our experience, is overwhelmingly kind and civil — but because we believe a clear code of conduct is a necessary part of building a respectful community space.

Wayward participants agree to:

Be friendly, welcoming, patient, and kind. Be considerate in speech and actions, and actively seek to acknowledge and respect the boundaries of fellow attendees. Wayward is a small space and we encourage intimate and close conversations about life and art, but please do not assume your fellow participants’ comfort level regarding difficult or contentious conversation topics, and varying levels of physical contact. When in doubt, check.

Be sensitive to the words and behavior you choose. Refrain from demeaning, discriminatory, or harassing behavior and speech. Harassment includes, but is not limited to:

  • Deliberate intimidation, including sustained or willful disruption of conversations or other activities.

  • Unwanted photography or recording.

  • Intentional and sustained misgendering, or use of "dead" names.

  • Unwanted physical contact, use of unwanted sexual or discriminatory imagery, comments, or jokes; and unwelcome sexual attention.

  • Unwelcome comments regarding a person’s lifestyle choices and practices, including those related to food, health, parenting, relationships, drugs, and employment.

If you feel that someone has harassed you or otherwise treated you inappropriately, please alert any member of the organizing team.

Wayward is a small community space, and prioritizes marginalized people’s safety over privileged people’s comfort. We reserve the right not to act on complaints regarding:

  • ‘Reverse’-isms, including ‘reverse racism,’ ‘reverse sexism,’ and ‘cisphobia’

  • Reasonable communication of boundaries, such as “leave me alone,” “go away,” or “I’m not discussing this with you.”

  • Communication in a ‘tone’ you don’t find congenial or friendly.

  • Criticizing racist, sexist, cissexist, or otherwise oppressive behavior or assumptions.

Take care of each other. At Wayward, we adopt "take care of each other" as a guiding principle. Alert a member of the organizing team if you notice a dangerous situation, someone in distress or discomfort, or violations of this code of conduct, even if they seem inconsequential or minor. As a small and intimate community space, we encourage participants to approach staff about even small discomforts, so that we may address them with the most care and the least amount of misunderstanding. Reporters of harassment will remain anonymous, including to other staff members if requested, and are not expected to sit in mediated conversation with offenders.

If any attendee engages in harassing behavior, the retreat organizers may take any lawful action we deem appropriate, including ending the offender's participation in the Wayward retreat.
